Monday morning, he was back to the grind. Not surprising that his boss wasn’t sold singularly on the fact that the technology he was researching could extend the life of rail. There was another side to that coin, and the number of coins was what Jack had to figure out now. For every one question he answered, three more scenarios lurked.
He sighed as he stepped into the elevator. Sure it was faster to take the stairs, but he needed just a moment alone to enjoy the feeling of time slowly slipping by and nothing else. The few minutes were a luxury to waste.
Jack got off a couple floors down and headed down the hall to the Finance offices. Another daunting task of seeing too much information for his noggin, but this was for work and there was no way out of it. At least Jack had some idea of what to expect. There were going to countless invoices for steel prices that were going to have to be separated for its application; whether it was straight rail, switches, or frogs.
He showed his ID badge and explained what he needed to the woman behind the desk. She took him into the archives and directed him to the correct section in the webby catacomb of files. The sound of her quiet laughter as the door swung shut should have been an indication of how much he bit off. The rows of files towered over him, giving him the sense that he was being swallowed whole by its contents, by the room.
The best thing to do though was to dive right in. Jack had already decided that a ten year trend of rail prices should be enough for his second pitch to nab the technology. At least that eliminated half a row of the many. It was going to take hours of pulling files to sort them and record the numbers.
He couldn’t help but look at the other documents in the files, noticing something else. There were quite a few large numbers. Now, a few hundred thousand wasn’t really enough to be alarmed about. That was almost a common expense for any switch or rail project. It wasn’t those prices that stood out, it was the opposite. There were enormous inflows of capital that far exceeded those large costs, enough to always put the company in the green financially.
It seemed that they started to appear around the time of the election. There were documented names of contributors when the amounts were in this large of quantities, but there was only one name that stuck out.
S. Whitmore.
